The place of love in this world cannot be underestimated, it is the strongest foundation of every human relationship and in christiandom love is said to be the greatest.
Another word translated love in the New Testament is the word charity, but actually love in essence can be divided into four in the Greek language.
1. Storge – Affection.
2. Phileo – Friendship
3. Eros – Romantic Love.
4. Agape- God kind of love.
Among these the phileo love which is true friendship is the least jealous of all the four. Storge which is natural affection develops through familiarity, this love doesn’t require a lot of efforts, is very mild, and pays attention to intricate issues that adds value to you.
The Phileo Love is the love that grows and can be shared, it is the least emotional among the four.
The Eros Love comes from the Greek God of Love, with red symbolizing it’s passion. Eros normally strives on appearance and where appearance diminishes, Eros goes down. Normally married couples can have Eros towards each other but Eros can’t sustain marriage. This kind of love is where most young people are having challenges dealing with.
Eros in itself is not a sin, however it idolization is what makes it a sin. And normally a love that is not ready for marriage, is not too strong to stand the turbulence of Eros which is the romantic love.
Moving on to the last Kind of love which is the highest and purest form of all love, is what I call the love that cannot be understood, because this kind of love goes beyond understanding. It is called the Agape Love; which is the God kind of love.
Among all these kinds of love, the Agape love alone cannot be understood, why??
Because it does not emanate from the natural or physical. The thing about love at any level is, love is always a beautiful thing but true love which is Agape never dies.
Now what is Agape and how can you understand this love if it cannot be comprehended. Paul tells us in Ephesians 3:19 “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Actually the Love Of Christ is also the God kind Of Love, both symbolizes Agape which is the highest form of love.
So now Paul is introducing us to a love which passeth knowledge, in other words, a love which none of us can comprehend with our natural human mind or senses, yet he says if you can know this love, then you can now be filled with all the fullness of God. Interesting isn’t it??? So now let’s start that journey of knowing this love which we don’t have the capacity in ourselves to know.
First of all, we have to understand that the Agape Love has several dimensions to it and for us to come to a complete knowledge about it, we need to know these dimensions. So again here is what Paul tells us about these dimensions; In Ephesians 3:18 “May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;”
So here we see, Paul talking about the depth, the breadth, the length and height of this Agape. Then we can also now know that the Agape Love among the four is the only love that has several dimensions to it, the others don’t have, they are just one way, which we talked about earlier. This tells us why all the other kinds of love can fail, but where the others can’t survive Agape will stand.
The Love of God is vast and wide, and this love is what He shed abroad in our hearts by the Holyspirit (Romans 5:5). The Holyspirit in us has this job of building inside of us the Agape Love of God which is the Father’s very own nature, the sons very own essence and the Spirit’s very’s own life which He builds in our spirit. Therefore to grow in this love, one has to encounter the very life of God; ye must be born again.
Remember, God is love and love is God, that is His nature. 1 John 2:15 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
This means, if any man loves the world the love of the Father who is God is not in him, but remember Paul saying the love of God has already been shed abroad in our heart by the Holy Spirit, so certainly if the love of the Father is not in you then it means you are not born again, because the Holy Ghost who is given to us at new birth builds the love.
So again, let’s understand that Agape is the language of the spirit not the mind, or the soul, that is why Agape is eternal because it is of the Holyspirit who in essence is God and cannot die.
Anything about anyone walking in Agape is life. Remember, we who love the brethren have passed on from death unto life. (1 John 3:14). The brother or sister who walks in Agape takes no offense against anyone, he or she comes to a realm where the love of God contraineth them. I show you a mystery, great peace have them that love thy law and nothing shall offend them (Psalm 119: 165). Beloved if we can stay in the word for long, we shall walk in Agape which is the highest level of maturity anyone can walk in.
This is because the very life in the word is the very life of the son of God and the life of the son of God who is God in fullness is love. Jesus on earth came to live love, His life was love and love was his life. We cannot live short of that because the master assured us that the greatest commandment there is, is love and we cannot but walk in love. The whole summation of the law of God is summed up in this; love God and love your neighbor as you do love yourself (Matthew 22:37-40).
In Him was life and that life was the light of all men (John 1:4). The only life that minister life to all men is love. The love in itself is light and for the same reason anything done outside of love cannot win anyone to Christ, because where love is absent, light cannot function. The light in us can only work if we nurture the seed of love given unto us by the Holy Spirit.
So now we have established that Agape is the greatest love, but how do we go beyond what we know about the love of Christ; how do we understand the love that cannot be understood???
Did you also know that there is something else that can give that is not necessarily love???
