My Experience With Prayer- 4 (Learning Prayer)

WHAT ABOUT PRAYER

The exercise of prayer exposes one major weakness in man and among believers which is that ability to pray and continue in prayer. The Bible calls this an infirmity and recognizes that most of us will have a struggle, not only to keep in that attitude of prayer, but also to spend real quality time in prayer(Romans 8:26 KJV).

So many reasons may account for this, but at the core of this may be that, we have not studied and learnt about prayer enough as we ought to.

LEARNING PRAYER

First of all, we must understand that the call to prayer is a privilege and must not be taken for granted. Because in prayer we are invited to fellowship with God Himself. Remember! our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ (1 John 1:3).

If we can have this in mind, it gives us a completely new attitude towards prayer where every moment of prayer is taken as a special time to meet with our Father.

STARTING TO PRAY

From there, anyone who desires to grow in prayer, must prioritize prayer and this starts by having a plan for it. This is a secret we must learn (to have a prayer schedule) it will guide and streamline our prayer life. By this, you can have a list of what you will be praying about each day, and trust me this will be the beginning of your victory.

THE MISCONCEPTION

However, there is the misconception that you should go into prayer without any idea of what you want to pray about and just follow the leadings of the Spirit. I say it is a misconception because that is looking at prayer from a very narrow view. Though there is a place for that, if we go into prayer each and every day without knowing what to pray about, eventually we will lose our interest in prayer and our prayer will lack focus.

THE PLACE OF THE WORD OF GOD

In my previous post, I wrote on how that prayer is effective with the word of God and therefore the importance of going into prayer with the knowledge of God’s word. This helps you separate the spiritual from what is not and here I mean, what is of God and what is not of Him. For many believers have fallen victims unawares, to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils sometimes after prayer.

These people might have even spent days praying on mountains and in hideouts. But that is why every encounter and experience we have in the spiritual must be authenticated by the word of God, for satan himself can be transformed into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).

THE CALL TO PRAYER

So when do we pray; There are times you pray when there is a call to prayer, either from an inspiration within, or a call to intercede. So as many as are led by the Spirit here are the sons of God. However, knowing and engaging in only this kind of prayer will defeat the essence of true prayer which is to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

So sometimes inspiration to pray can even be stirred up through music, sermons and other christian resources. But where there is no inspiration comes the art of discipline and persistence, where we deliberately choose to follow our set times of prayer regardless.

CONCLUSION

And as you begin to persevere in prayer, God will come through for you, for His eyes run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart are committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9).

Are you willing to be one?? Then you must have a prayer life. May the Good Lord, help us all!!

  1. This is very valuable advice about “structured prayer,” similar to Hebrew prayers on specific holy days.
However, praying without ceasing is, by definition, unstructured, else how could it be continuous?
We all have an inner “conversation” going all the time, as we think ABOUT our thoughts. The art of praying without ceasing is to develop this as a conversation with Father.
Good teaching, though, about making a special discipline of structured prayer. 👍

    1. Thank you C. A.
      C. A your addition on the 1 Thessalonians 5:17 is just on point, very perfect. The Art of praying without ceasing, is developing that conversation with God in our everyday life, I wish I could do an edit to add that😀

God richly bless you as always ❤️

      1. Um, I think you can! Just go back to the blog and add it. Those who already received it won’t get the edit unless they go back to it, but new visitor would see it. 😉
        Blessings, my brother.
